Operation Sindoor may have done something India’s defence industry could never achieve with a brochure: give the Akash missile a battlefield record. During the May 2025 conflict, India’s indigenous Akash system formed part of the multi-layered air-defence network used against Pakistani drones and missiles. The government later described Akash’s performance as “stellar”. Now Armenia, already an Akash customer, is reportedly looking at the upgraded Akash-NG. That matters because Armenia faces a difficult security environment and is increasingly diversifying away from traditional Russian suppliers. India has already supplied Armenia with systems including Akash, Pinaka and Swathi. The relationship is becoming a wider defence partnership. The bigger story is India’s emergence as an arms exporter. Akash is no longer just a domestic missile. It is becoming a test of whether combat-proven Indian technology can win buyers across Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and beyond. Operation Sindoor may have changed the sales pitch forever.
