But here is the catch: France did not fine Infosys for making employees work 70 hours. The French labour authority said the company’s tracking system did not fully meet legal requirements around reliability, auditability and monitoring. France’s legal working week is 35 hours, while overtime is subject to compensation and record-keeping rules. Murthy’s 2023 argument was very different. He said young Indians should work longer to improve productivity and help India compete globally. The clash now is bigger than Infosys. Europe generally treats working-time records as a safeguard for employee rights. India’s corporate culture has often celebrated long hours as a sign of ambition and sacrifice.
