More than 1,00,843 schools across India are operating with just one teacher, according to the latest UDISE+ 2025-26 data presented in Parliament. Andhra Pradesh tops the list with 16,357 single-teacher schools, followed by Jharkhand and Maharashtra. While the Centre says India’s overall pupil-teacher ratio remains within National Education Policy norms, the data highlights significant disparities in teacher deployment across states, raising concerns over the quality of education in thousands of schools.
