Donald Trump has rejected Benjamin Netanyahu’s opposition to a US sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey. But that does not mean Ankara is getting aircraft anytime soon. The State Department says Washington’s policy remains unchanged. Turkey must first resolve the S-400 issue by no longer possessing the Russian system or associated equipment, promise not to acquire it again and satisfy other statutory conditions. The dispute dates back to 2019, when Turkey was removed from the F-35 programme after purchasing the S-400. Washington feared the Russian system could expose sensitive information about the stealth fighter. Israel now fears an F-35 sale could upset the military balance. Trump, however, sees Turkey as a valuable NATO ally and regional player, including in diplomacy involving Gaza and Ukraine. Ankara also wants US engines for its KAAN fighter. The message is clear: Trump’s political support may open doors, but US law controls the runway.
